John Bradbury Honored

This year's SACRED CRAFT Consumer Surfboard Expo honors legendary Santa Barbara area shaper JOHN BRADBURY. The Expo takes place at the Ventura County Fairgrounds for two days of surfboards, live shaping, demos, seminars, movies, music and good times, May 16 & 17, 2009.

John Bradbury was a highly influential Santa Barbara shaper/surfer who learned his craft under the tutelage of Renny Yater. Bradbury was a 'locals local' and the epitome of the local shaper with a faithful clientele of underground wave riders, a shaping bay in his backyard, and a keen eye on approaching swells. Through the '60s and '70s, Bradbury's "Creative Freedom" logo was synonymous with the underground Santa Barbara surfing scene. In the mid-eighties he was among a handful of board builders who began experimenting with polystyrene epoxy. Bradbury's lightweight contemporary designs caught the attention of top pros such as Martin Potter, Cheyne Horan and Brad Gerlach.

Sadly, John died of leukemia in 1999. Ten years later, in the spring of 2009, six regional shapers will honor Bradbury's legacy in the "Tribute to the Masters Shape-off" by replicating a classic Bradbury design.

"I'm super stoked to see my dad and his work honored in this fashion," said John's son Josh Bradbury. "My dad's time on this earth was too short, but thankfully people still appreciate his shaping skills and more importantly, what a great person he was."

The SACRED CRAFT Consumer Surfboard Expo is an opportunity for shapers, surfboard craftsman and surfboard manufacturers to come together under one roof and share their passion with the surfboard loving public. It operates with one sole objective, to bring passionate surfers in front of passionate board builders. Plans for a Fall 2009 expo in Del Mar, and a Spring 2010 Expo in Huntington Beach are already underway.

  1. Naples Coalition volunteers, the Sisters and Brothers of the Immaculate Coastline East of Conception, were totally and completely honored and humbled to have received the John Bradbury donation award this year at this amazing event. Our friends, Nole Cossart and Chadd Konig gained us this recognition with their paddle from Gaviota to the Mexican border. Together, they spread the word of current trends to develop Naples and the pristine Gaviota Coast. On their journey, they hope to change the tides and save Naples from destruction.
Thank you to Josh and all who honor the Sacred Craft and the Immaculate Coastline.

I was one of the fortunate Santa Barbara surfers who knew John Bradbury well and loved and rode his incredible surfboards. Between 1966 and 1971, myself and Santa Barbara local surfers like Danny and Alan Hazard ,Shaun Claffey,Kevin Sears,Ronnie Wolf,Dickie Nelson,Glen Vance,Andy Newman and others, all rode his brilliant surfboards. And all of us Hope Ranch Surf Club members will never forget his influence and leadership as a man,a friend ,and a true soul surfer. Thanks John, for being there.
