Kammie's to BK's

Hawaii’s Barry Kanaiaupuni Set To Open New Sunset Beach Store

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 March, 2006 : - - Quiksilver is pleased to announce a new store to be opened at Sunset Beach, Hawaii, owned by legendary Sunset surfer and lifelong Oahu resident Barry Kanaiaupuni, also known as "BK". The surf store will be called BK's Quiksilver Sunset Beach and will include a market and deli. It is due to open by July 1, 2006.

Up until now, the location was home to Kammie's Market, a family store that has done business there since 1961 and is well-known and remembered throughout the surf community. It was hoped that the Kam family would stay on in the new market/deli, however they have declined.

“With so many changes taking place on the islands we are happy to see the store stay in the hands of locals who care about the community and the culture," said Glen Moncata. “With the help of Quiksilver, the remodel of the existing building will reflect and respect the local architecture and will be a place the entire North Shore community can be proud of.”

Kanaiaupuni is no new-comer to business on the North Shore, having operated two stores over the past 25 years in Hale'iwa town. He and his wife Leslee continue to do business there in the Quiksilver Boardriders Store they own.

"We used to come out here in the '60s and Kammie's was the only store," said Kanaiaupuni. "It has been a permanent fixture throughout everybody's lifetime and my wife and I feel proud to uphold a local tradition as we move forward with the new store.”

Kanaiaupuni first made a name for himself in the '70s for his powerful charge out at Sunset on the really big days. A Top 10-rated surfer on the early IPS pro surfing tour, he has spent most of his life around Sunset Beach.
