Panaitan Island Pillage

The following comes via Jason Childs, Senior Photographer for Surfer Magazine (via Surfersvillage):

---------------------------

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 March 2005: - - I would like to make a few points clear about the destruction that is going on at Panaitan Island a World Heritage listed National Park. I'm devastated by what Matt Rumley and his investors are doing and will be emailing all the Surf Industry and Media asking them to boycott this camp and any Surf Travel Agents, etc that are involved. A newly formed organization out of Jakarta, The Panaitan Island Conservation Group (PICG) will be doing all it can to preserve one of the World's and Indonesia's last untouched areas. We hope you will support us in saving the World Heritage Listed National Park of Panaitan Island, West Java, Indonesia.

Matt Rumley-G Spot Surf Camp owner is building a Surf Camp out at Panaitan Island. Until yesterday he had been selling it as a Surf Camp. But, due to pressure has now changed his tact and has called it an Eco Resort and now claims that he is only managing it for the National Parks Department. This is not the first time people have tried to build a camp out on the Island...

Panaitan Island Destruction

`It is alleged that you are developing a surf camp on the Island of
Panaitan. It was suggested that initially this development was a surf camp.
However it is now reported that the development is being represented as an
Eco-Resort. What is your response?
(GSPOT)
THE NATIONAL PARKS OF INDONESIA AND TOGETHER WITH THE HELP OF A LOCAL INDONESIAN COMPANY HAVE CONSTRUCTED AN ECO FRIENDLY RESORT OFFICE AND RANGER FACILITIES AT LEGON BAJO ON PANAITAN ISLAND A CONSERVATION SECTION OF THE UJUNG KULON NATIONAL PARK BANTEN INDONESIA AND IS A IN VALUABLE PROTECTED AREA.
WE( GSPOT) ARE A SURF TRAVEL COMPANY THAT WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO BE OFFERED THE RIGHTS TO MARKET THE CAMP AS A SURFING CAMP. THERE HAS BEEN NO CHANCE IN OUR MARKETING STRATEGY AND THE LEGON BAJO RESORT OFFICE AND RANGER FACILITIES OF PANAITAN ISLAND A CONSERVATION SECTION OF THE UJUNG KULON NATIONAL PARK CONTINUES TO MARKETED AS A SURF CAMP BY GSPOT.
THE LEGON BAJO RESORT OFFICE AND RANGER FACILITIES OF PANAITAN ISLAND A CONSERVATION SECTION OF THE UJUNG KULON NATIONAL PARK WILL ALSO BE MARKETED BY US FOR DIVING AND ALSO ECO TOURS AND APPROPIATE MARKETING STRATEGIES WILL BE EMPLOYEED TO ATTRACT THE INTENDED CLIENTEL

*
It is also suggested that the camp is the idea of the Dept. of Forestry's.
Could you please elaborate on this allegation further.
(GSPOT)
THE LEGON BAJO RESORT OFFICE AND RANGER FACILITIES OF PANAITAN ISLAND IS A CONSERVATION SECTION OF THE UJUNG KULON NATIONAL PARK AND IS PROPERTY OF THE NATIONAL PARKS OF INDONESIA AND REMAINS THE PROPERTY OF INDONESIAN GOVERMENT

* Have you obtained a license from the local authorities and government
orginisations to allow the logging of this area?

(GSPOT)
I AM LEAD TO BELIEVE ALL APPROPIATE PARTIES HAVE BEEN CONTACTED AND APPROPIATE LICENCES/PERMITS HAVE BEEN OBTAINED. I STRESS AGAIN THIS IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATIONAL PARKS OF INDONESIA, NOT GSPOT SURF CAMPS AS WIDE SPREAD GOSSIP AND PROPAGANDA HAS SPECTULATED

*How is it that you are allowed to clear forest in a World Heritage Listed
area?
(GSPOT)
THE LEGON BAJO RESORT OFFICE AND RANGER FACILITIES OF PANAITAN ISLAND A CONSERVATION SECTION OF THE UJUNG KULON NATIONAL PARK IS A MANAGEMENT PLAN IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY INDONESIA AND WORLD HERITAGE LISTED AREAS .
ANY CLEARING OF THE FOREST WAS UNDER STRICT GUIDELINES FROM
NATIONAL PARKS. ALL TREES WERE MARKED RECORDED, AND WILL BE REPLANTED.
ALL NATIONAL PARKS HAVE SOME KIND OF INFUSTRUTURE, THE ROYAL NATIONAL PARK EVEN HAS BOARDRIDER CLUBS AND LIFEGUARD HOUSES.
I STRESS AGAIN GSPOT SURF CAMPS ISNT CLEARING ANYTHING, THE NATIONAL PARKS OF INDONESIA ARE CREATING A LEGON BAJO RESORT OFFICE AND RANGER FACILITIES ON PANAITAN ISLAND A CONSERVATION SECTION OF THE UJUNG KULON NATIONAL PARK.
WHEN WE THINK WORLD HERITAGE LISTED, DOES THAT MEAN WE WRAP IT IN GLAD WRAP AND NO ONE IS PERMITTED TO STAY AND ENJOY ITS BEAUTY? THE BARRIER REEF IS WORLD HERITAGE, KOMODO ISLAND IS WORLD HERITAGE, BOTH CARRY MASSIVE CONTROLED TOURISM. THIS IS WHAT THE NATIONAL PARKS WISH TO CREATE, CONTROLLED TOURISM.

*Are you concerned that your development will affect wildlife, surrounding
forest environments and nearby marine ecosystems due to an influx of human
occupation?
(GSPOT)
I WOULD BE NIEVE TO BELIEVE THIS DEVELOPMENT WONT HAVE ANY NEGATIVITIES, BUT I ALSO LOOK AT THE POSITIVES. PANAITAN ISLAND OVER RECENT YEARS HAS GATHERED MASSIVE PRESS THROUGH SURFING JOURNELS, DOCUMENTARIES ETC AND TOURISM IS OFF COURSE INCREASING FROM THIS.THERE ARE AN INCREASING AMOUNT OF INCIDENTS HAPPENING UN REPORTED OUT AT PANAITAN ISLAND, UN REGISTERED SURFERS BREAKING LIMBS AND NEEDING TO BE EVACUATED BY THE NATIONAL PARKS, ALTHOUGHT THE PARKS DIDN’T EVEN KNOW THEY WERE THERE AS THEY CAUGHT ILLEGAL FISHING BOATS OUT THERE AND DIDN’T REGISTER.
THERE ARE SURFERS CAMPING ON THE ISLAND, BRINGING IN NON NATIVE LIVESTOCK TO ISLAND, WHICH COULD HAVE HAD DEVASTATING EFFECTS TO NATIVE WILDLIFE, NOT TO MENTION THAT ITS JUST ILLEGAL TO DO SO. HEY MAN, YOU CANT EVEN TAKE YOUR PET DOG IN THE ROYAL NATIONAL PARK, AND HERE ARE SURFERS MAKING DOCUMENTARIES OF THEMSELVES, IMPORTING GOATS, AND ILLEGALLYT FISHING AND RAVISHING REEFS.
PANAITAN ISLAND IS A NO FISH ZONE.
THE ISLAND HAS FOR YEARS ALREADY HAD DESIGNIGATED WALK TRAILS ETC, FOR ECO TOURISM AND THERE IS NO TALK OF MASS TOURISM BEING MENTIONED BY THE NATIONAL PARKS. THE PARKS HAVE MADE IT QUITE CLEAR THEY WANT IT TO BE LIMITED CONTROLLED TOURISM. THE LEGON BAJO RESORT OFFICE AND RANGER FACILITIES OF PANAITAN ISLAND A CONSERVATION SECTION OF THE UJUNG KULON NATIONAL PARK WILL BE STAFFED BY RANGERS TO MONITOR THE ISLAND IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT.
A VERY SACRET HINDU TEMPLE WAS TAKEN IN RECENT YEARS &
THERE IS CONTINUED ILLEGAL FISHING TAKING PLACE. NOW
RANGERS WILL BE ON HAND TO MONITOR THE ISLAND WITH REGULAR WEEKLY WATER PATROLS OF THE ENTIRE PANAITAN ISLAND AND ENFORCE THE LAW

THEY ARE CURRENTLY WORKING TOWARDS A GREEN GLOBE 21 AWARD AND WITH ONGOING TRAINING WE ARE SURE THEY WILL ACHIEVE IT . GSPOT SURF CAMPS HAS PERSONALLY HELPED IN DONATING FUNDS TO SEND RANGERS TO THAILAND FOR ENVIROMENTAL TRAINING, AND WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE PARKS UNTIL WE HAVE ACHIEVED OUR MUTURAL GOALS, THAT IS TO CREATE A SAFE ENVIROMENT TOGETHER WITH THE UJUNG KULON NATIONAL PARKS OF INDONESIA
*It is alleged that the endangered Javanese Rhinoceros exists in the
surrounding area of your development. If it found to exist in any sort of
numbers on the Island, would you consider that your development may damage
its immediate habitat?
(GSPOT)
THE JAVAN RHINOCEROS DOES NOT INHABIT PANAITAN ISLAND, IT INHABITS THE PENINSULA OF UJUNG KULON NATIONAL PARK AND IS TIGHTLY PROTECTED BY THE NATIONAL PARKS OF INDONESIA.

*From my sources, it is alleged that in the past you have abused your
position as surf camp operator. What is your response to the allegation that
you payed off G-Land rangers in order to transport surfers to the nearby
National Park and its surf breaks?
(GSPOT)
WE ARE APPALLED AT RECENT ALLOCATIONS AND UN FOUND RUMOURS AGAINST NOT ONLY ME PERSONALLY, BUT TO MY COMPANY, SHAREHOLDERS, FAMILY AND OF COURSE THE NATIONAL PARKS THAT WE ARE CORRUPT, DISLOYAL AND ABUSING OUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS SURF TOUR OPERATORS IN INDONESIA.
I HAVE WORKED TOGETHER WITH THE NATIONAL PARKS FOR MANY YEARS NOW, AND WE HAVE ALWAYS OBTAINED ALL APPROPIATE PERMITS LICENCEING ETC.THERE WAS A TIME I WAS PERMITTED ONLY TO TAKE LIMITED NUMBERS INTO G-LAND, AND I MAY HAVE GONE OVER THOSE NUMBERS FROM TIME TO TIME, BUT ONLY BECAUSE GSPOT SURF CAMPS TRIES THERE HARDEST TO PLEASE THERE CUSTOMERS AND NUMBERS GREW QUICKLY, BUT IF THATS ABUSING, WELL YES I ABUSED, BUT I HAVE NEVER OPERATED UN LICENCED.
IN DEFENSE OF RECENT RUMOURS SPREAD BY AN UNOFFICIAL GROUP AND MOSTLY BY A AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHER, THE DIRECTORATE GENERAL OF THE NATIONAL PARKS OF INDONESIA CONTACTED THE UN OFFICIAL GROUP AND ASKED HIM/THEY TO ATTEND A MEETING AT THE FORESTRY DEPARTMENT HEAD OFFICE IN JAKARTA, BUT NOT SUPRISINGLY, NO ONE SHOWED!!!
I MIGHT ADD TO MAKE DOCUMENTARIES OR TO CREATE PHOTOGRAPHY INTENDED FOR COMMERCIAL USE INSIDE A NATIONAL PARK IN INDONESIA, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN PERMITS PRIOR TO ENTRY, THE PARTY/S MAKING THE ABSURD ALLOGATIONS AGAINST ME AND MY COMPANY HAVE NEVER DONE SO, SO I ASK NOW, WHO IS OPERATING ILLEGALLY???
For any further information or enquires into the development on Panaitan island please contact:

Is it true that before this camp was built that the island had been free of human habitation (with the exception of park rangers) since 1937... If so what are these guys doing there?

If we have kept the millions of Indonesians from thrashing the place for decades... how did you get permission to live there.

I have evidence of members of your organisation importing both MDMA and ecstacy into Australia and New Zealand...

Will you swap your freedom for the removal of the camp from Panaitan?

SERIOUS MATT... Back out of there while you can

Here's the latest & greatest. The next wanker Aussie (no disrespect to Aussies in general, it could have been a seppo) has stepped up as the new camp director. Guy's name is Craig Sheriff & I understand that when he's not slinging hash at Lakeys or taking tourist surf photos, then selling them to whoever they're of (without a working visa in Indo of course), he's renting his zodiac illegally without a KITAS. He's now boasting the Panaitan Nightmare Camp will cost USD $850 per week, and the boats will REALLY be banned this time around. Good work, as he effectively out-prices any “local” to ever be able to surf there again and kills any hope of preserving the place that all who frequent it do. He must have went to the same school as Matt Rumley, because of course he preaches that he is only the puppet of the National Parks. My question is, "where do they find these guys"???? 1st Rumley, the notorious total idget that is barred permanently from Medeiwi, married into a National Parks family, and has recently fallen out with his G-Spot partners due to idiocy. Now we have Mr. Sheriff, the new and improved scam artist that will undoubtedly be welcomed into the same circle of corrupt Parks officials that Rumley married into. The big question is......will UNESCO, whom are supposed to govern and protect this world heritage area, stand up and earn what they get paid to do in Indonesia? There will be a jetty/pier built soon to accommodate this ridiculous "eco-camp" that will further hammer this pristine and delicate area. Mr. Sheriff's email, for those that would like to say hello to this new hero, is.... balisurfco@hotmail.com . Stay tuned as the next season unfolds. FOPI......HELP!!!!!!!!
