Dick Brewer

Brewer's still making boards and still in the game. Here's some history from the Brewer boards website:

Dick Brewer's History

Dick Brewer is simply the most amazing guy to ever shape boards and at nearly 65, still one of the coolest people alive. If you're a surfer and never ridden a Brewer board you have deprived yourself of one of life's greatest pleasures.

To the Dick Brewer fan club:
As far as I'm concerned Dick Brewer is a taker not a giver to surfing. He is a thankless zero. By the way did you know Dick has no children from his various partnerships.

As a shaper, Dick Brewer has contributed as much to surfboard design as any living human. As a human, his is a sad story. How important are surfboards in the scheme of things?

Hey Anonymous, So, having kids is what qualifies you as a good person??? I guess that makes Bin Laden a great man then with 54 offspring... OK.

Dick Brewer and his former protege Legendary 70's surfer Reno Abellira (commonly mispelled "Abellera") are both sad stories. Great shapers/surfers though and will probably be recogized as important historical figures for maybe the next 50 years, if lucky.

Dear Anonymous/Angela,
You know nothing about Richard Brewer. He has dedicated his life to the development of the modern surfboard. He is one of the few who has not cashed in on the popularity of his name or surfing. He has been shaping for fifty years and still developes boards for top surfers like Laird Hamilton.
By the way. He has fathered two children (a boy and a girl). His son was killed in an automobile accident years ago. A tragedy of that scale is one that very few can fully recover from.

I know Dick personally and I can tell you that in addition to being a brilliant shaper, he is a kind and generous man. Like the Hawaiians he emulates, he trusts everyone he meets. And like the Hawaiians, he continues to trust everyone even though they are not worthy of their/his trust.

I met R.B.'s daughter Lani working at the Wyland Gallery in Haleiwa. RB himself is a very cool person and shaper extraordinaire who has given a lifetime of shaping experience to many of his proteges'. A mechanical engineer who became a surfboard shaper, whos innovative designs also set the standards of the times. He has designed big wave boards for Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama to ride Jaws. I would say of the folks who speak badly of him, to read up on surfing history a little more.
